Peirce students fill out an enrollment form and a Home Language Survey (HLS) on arrival. If the parents answer "Yes" to the question, "Is a language other than English spoken at home?" a test is given to the student to determine if he/she is an English Language Learner (ELL), and he/she may be placed in a bilingual classroom. |
Transitional Bilingual Instruction
Not all English Language Learners (ELLs) are in self-contained bilingual classrooms. Many ELLs are placed in regular classes with English as a Second Language (ESL)-endorsed teachers. Peirce has both a push-in and pull-out program where students receive English instruction in a co-teaching setting as well as small group tutoring. ELLs must complete at least 3 years and score 4.7 on the ACCESS for ELLs test in order to exit the bilingual program.
Parents have the right to refuse bilingual services. There is a form sent out every year with a letter explaining the program and their options. The goal of the bilingual program is to help students acquire English as soon as possible through English ESL lessons and Sheltered Instruction. Native language instruction facilitates student learning of concepts in the different content areas in order to develop strong foundational skills before transference to the English language.
